December 14, 2003, Marietta, GA…Champagne flowed, colored lights lit up heavily decorated rooms, and politicians talked over future election plans during the annual holiday open house held by Cobb Democratic Women (CDW). Hosted at the home of State Representative Pat Dooley and husband John Dooley, the festive occasion was a season highlight on a historic day marking the capture of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

In a written statement to the press, Chairman of the Cobb County Democratic Committee Guy Drexinger said approximately 200 Democrats attended the event, including unseated politicians, those presently in office, and candidate hopefuls:  former U.S. Congressman Buddy Darden; State Representatives Doug Stoner and Rob Teilhet; State Senate Candidates Clem Doyle and Preston Fletcher; State House Candidates Joel Cope and Patrick Stafford; and County Commission Candidates Annette Kesting and David Wilkerson. Also attending were former U.S. Senator Max Cleland and Fulton County Sheriff Candidate Charles Rambo.

“I was delighted to have former Senator Max Cleland as our surprise guest at this year's Annual Holiday Open House,” exclaimed CDW President Beverly Tarpley McMurray. “He brightened everyone’s spirits, which were already high due to the news that Saddam Hussein had been captured.”

“We must come together to rally around the person who becomes the Democratic candidate for President,” said Cleland who just last week was appointed by the Senate to a seat on the Export-Import Bank's board of directors after being nominated to the position by President Bush. At the gathering, Cleland praised female Democrats, saying, “They are always on top of things.” 

The successful event featured a light buffet catered by volunteers. “We were very pleased with the turnout, especially among the African-American community whose numbers were much greater than in previous years,” McMurray said.
