In light of the recent Trayvon Martin shooting,
Central Florida Urban League (CFUL) president and chief executive
officer Allie L. Braswell, Jr. is calling for swift action to bring
about an immediate, transparent resolution.
"This is an
unfortunate and especially tragic incident given that a youth's life was
lost. A private citizen taking law enforcement into his own hands is
not and cannot be condoned. Our society cannot allow this return to
vigilantism to have any inference of support from our elected or law
enforcement officials," Braswell said.
At a community meeting of concerned citizens earlier this week, demands for a
thorough investigation were made by leaders.
"If it is found that a crime has been committed, the shooter must be
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Braswell says. "In the
words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to
justice everywhere.' Loss of life without a thorough investigation is
inadequate. We request that the state attorney, Florida law enforcement
and the Department of Justice take immediate action."
Earlier this month the National Urban League released its annual report on the State of Black America. The report is entitled: Occupy the Vote to Educate, Employ, and Empower. To read the full report, go to http://www.iamempowered.com/node/23900.
